And soon, mechanically, overwhelmed by the dreary day and the prospect of a sad following day,

I raised to my lips a spoonful of tea where I had softened up a piece of madeleine.

But at the very moment the mouthful blended with the cake crumbs touched my palate, I shuddered,

attentive to what was occurring of extraordinary to me. A delicious pleasure had taken over me, isolated,

without the notion of its cause. It immediately had rendered indifferent the vicissitudes of life,

its disasters harmless, its brevity illusory, in the same way as love works,

filling me with a precious essence : or rather that essence was not in me, it was me.

I stopped feeling mediocre, contingent, mortal. From where in me could that powerful joy come ?

I felt it was related to the taste of tea and cake, but was beyond it infinitely,

should not be of the same nature.
